Epic Fights Collection #7 || Dan Henderson versus Fedor Emilianenko || Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson

July 30th was the date a fight between two veterans of the sport happened. After his loss to Jake Shields, Dan Henderson had been on a tear in Strikeforce. After he knocked out Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral, ‘Dangerous Dan’ knocked out Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante to win the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight title. Meanwhile, his opponent, the legendary ‘Last Emperor’ had struggled to come up with a win after he had been beaten by Fabricio Werdum in 2010 and then Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva earlier in the year.

The bout took place at heavyweight, with Dan Henderson coming in at 206 pounds - one pound over the light heavyweight limit. And despite fighting at heavyweight for the first time in his career, Henderson managed to best the Russian. Despite being troubled in the first few minutes of the fight, Henderson survived the onslaught from the ‘Last Emperor’ and turned the tables to nail a uppercut from underneath before he pounded his opponent out for the victory.

Straight after the victory, Henderson made his way to the UFC where his winning streak continued…

Epic Fights Collection #6 || Nick Diaz versus Paul Daley || Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley

British slugger Paul Daley booked his ticket to take on Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz with a vicious knockout over Scott Smith. ‘Semtex’ looked to use his explosive striking to put down Diaz and it seemed like he had the Welterweight Champion finished. But Diaz hung on and managed to drop Daley and finish him off in the final seconds of the first round. Arguably, one of the most intense and exciting rounds of last year.

Epic Fights Collection #5 || B.J. Penn versus Nick Diaz || UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz

Back in the Autumn of 2011, a major change happened to UFC 137. Former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion, Nick Diaz, was scheduled to take on UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre for the title. However, after he failed to appear for several press conferences, Diaz was scrapped from the bout and replaced by Carlos Condit and placed in a fight with B.J. Penn (who was originally scheduled to face Condit on the same night).

Another major change occurred when Georges St. Pierre injured himself during training. As a result, the fight with Condit was scrapped entirely with Condit wanting to sit out until GSP got better. That of course, promoted Penn and Diaz to the main event.

Primarily a stand-up war, both Penn and Diaz wanted to show who the superior boxer was after they cancelled each other out on the ground. The sheer volume of Nick Diaz’s strikes proved overwhelming for Penn and left his face a mess — something that had never been done to Penn before. In the end, the superior and sharper boxing of Stockton’s own earned him the victory. Penn announced his retirement after the loss while Nick Diaz called out Georges St. Pierre and helped Joe Rogan promote his podcast…

“Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night…All day!”

Epic Fights Collection #4 || Eddie Alvarez versus Mike Chandler || Bellator 58

The undefeated Mike Chandler had been considered the underdog in this classic battle against Eddie Alvarez. Chandler — who had earned the right to fight Alvarez for the Bellator Lightweight Title — surprised fans when he managed to dispatch Alvarez in the fourth round, after a back and forth fight which is now considered the best fight in Bellator’s history. The rear naked choke was the submission that finished off Alvarez as Chandler was able to hand only his third loss in his whole career.

Epic Fights Collection #3 || Anderson Silva versus Chris Leben || UFC Ultimate Fight Night 5

After he disposed of Tony Fryklund with a slick back elbow, former PRIDE fighter Anderson Silva signed a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. And his first fight? Well, he would have to take on Ultimate Fighter alumni Chris ‘The Crippler’ Leben, a fighter who had attained a 5-0 record in the UFC after his stint in the first season of the Ultimate Fighter.

On June 28th of 2006, fans inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino witnessed the beginning of a new era. In a fight which never saw the minute mark, Anderson Silva absolutely obliterated Chris Leben, putting him down with a knee from the clinch. The thing that stands out most from this fight is the fact that Silva’s striking accuracy was 100%. He landed EVERY shot that he threw in the fight.

Of course, Silva went on to beat Rich Franklin and gain the UFC Middleweight title, but this fight with Chris Leben was the initial showcase of Silva’s skills to the UFC fans.

Also, enjoy Josh Koscheck’s reaction to the knockout …

Epic Fights Collection #2 || Chuck Liddell versus Wanderlei Silva || UFC 79: Nemesis

On December 29th of 2007, the world watched as a ‘dream’ match took place at UFC 79: Nemesis. After Zuffa purchased Pride Fighting Championships in October of that year, Dana White made the announcement that Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva would go to war in Wanderlei’s debut. The former PRIDE Middleweight Champion put up a fight in this stand-up battle, but in the end, it was Liddell who came out on top via unanimous decision.
